Born in Exning in Q3-1894, [Newmarket 3b:487] the 2nd son of Walter and Ellen Mary MARKHAM (née ASHBY), of 22 Nat Flatman Street,
Newmarket.
1901 census...George [6] was at 22 Nat Flatman Street with his father Walter [34] a stableman born in Swinton, Lancs; his mother Ellen[32] born Exning; brothers Ronald [10] and Albert [4]; sisters Agnes [8] and Florence [1], all born in Exning. 1911 census...George [16] was a stableman/apprentice, with Harold Bazley in Kentford (the Gables,opposite the "Cock Inn"). His parents were still at 22 Nat Flatman Street with three more children, Arthur James [9]; Alex William [6] and Ethel May [2]. One child had died. |

The 15th Suffolks had been in Palestine with the 74th Division, but sailed from Alexandria to Marseilles, arriving on May 7th 1918.
After a time in Reserve they found themselves on the Somme and were in support on September 2nd around Nurlu (NNE of Peronne). On the 5th September
and the next two days, they attacked the Templeux la Fosse and Bois Gurlu system of trenched, sustaining over 100 casualties. On the 5th the
battalion had 11 killed, 5 of them joining George, commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial, having no known grave.
